NDC elects new leaders in Enugu

 

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has elected Dr Johnpaul Anih as its Enugu State chairman and Dr Sebastine Chukwuebuka Okafor as state secretary during its congress held in Enugu.

Dr Anih, a former Labour Party House of Assembly candidate in the 2023 general election, emerged alongside 28 other executives through a consensus arrangement adopted by party delegates at the meeting on Monday.

The State Congress Committee Secretary, Engr Echezona Ogbanufe, announced the outcome after motions for the dissolution of the acting executives and adoption of a new leadership list were moved by the Acting State Deputy Chairman, Ambassador Chinachi Nnabuko Chibueze, and the Acting Publicity Secretary, Chuma Amadife.

Addressing the new executives, Ogbanufe urged them to strengthen the party’s structure by mobilising support and accommodating new members. He emphasised unity, discipline and loyalty, saying the party’s success would depend on collective effort.

He also called for transparency, accountability and internal democracy, urging the leadership to remain accessible to members and to prioritise grassroots engagement across wards and local government areas.

In his acceptance speech, Dr Anih thanked delegates for their support and pledged to lead with fairness and inclusiveness. He said his administration would focus on strengthening party structures and positioning the NDC as a credible alternative in Enugu State.

He also acknowledged the support of key party leaders, including National Leader Seriake Dickson, National Chairman Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe, National Secretary Barrister Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, and South-East National Vice Chairman Chief Teddy Obey.

Dr Anih commended the outgoing chairman, Engr Obetta, for his contributions to the party’s development and expressed confidence in future electoral success.

Other members of the newly elected executive include Mrs Florence Anigbo (Women Leader), Hon Clinton Ogbonna (Youth Leader), Barrister Chimezie Nwodo (Legal Adviser), Barrister Michael Ozioko (Assistant Legal Adviser), Mr Emmanuel Ugwueze (Publicity Secretary), Chief Rex Arum (Assistant Publicity Secretary), and Mr Nnejichoke Michael (State Treasurer).

Additional officials elected are Mrs Chioma Agbo, Hon John Onovo, Engr Samuel Ugochukwu, Mrs Olivia Okenyi, Kingsley Onochie, Barrister S. N. Egbo, Chief Austin Anih and Dr Emmanuel Agbo, among others.

The congress concluded before a group of suspected thugs, who arrived later, could disrupt proceedings.
