Fire service urges use of extinguishers in homes, vehicles

The Nigeria Fire Service has called on Nigerians to ensure the availability and proper use of functional fire extinguishers in homes and vehicles as part of efforts to curb fire outbreaks at the early stage.

The appeal was made by the Assistant Controller General in charge of Zone M of the Federal Fire Service, Mr. Godwin Ejembi-Egbe, while speaking with journalists in Enugu on Wednesday.

Zone M comprises Anambra, Ebonyi, and Enugu States.

Mr. Ejembi-Egbe stressed that prevention and quick response remain critical in reducing fire disasters, noting that many fire incidents escalate due to delayed intervention.

He stated that it was important for vehicle owners to prioritize safety by installing fire extinguishers, adding that the cost of such safety equipment is minimal compared to the value of most vehicles.

According to him, “It does not make sense to buy a vehicle worth millions of naira without a portable fire extinguisher that costs less than ₦10,000 to protect it.”

He also advised households to have at least two functional fire extinguishers placed in accessible locations to enable quick response in case of emergencies.

The Assistant Controller General warned that small fire outbreaks could escalate into major disasters within minutes if not promptly contained.

He encouraged members of the public to seek guidance from the Fire Service on the proper use of extinguishers, adding that officers are always available to provide training.

Mr. Ejembi-Egbe further cautioned against improper handling of flammable materials, urging residents to store such items away from heat sources and keep them out of reach of children.

He advised that combustible materials should not be kept near kitchens, open flames, or busy areas within homes.

The Federal Fire Service says increased public awareness and preparedness remain key to reducing fire-related incidents across the country.
