Fubara’s Brother Joins Rivers Governorship Race After Meeting Dickson

Younger brother of Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, Ambassador Blessing Fubara, has formally joined the 2027 governorship race in the state on the platform of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, NDC, pledging to restore political stability, economic prosperity, and public confidence in the oil-rich state.

The governorship aspirant made his declaration in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, where he described himself as “a ready, competent and energetic candidate” committed to rebuilding Rivers State and restoring what he called the “lost soul” of the state.

Blessing Fubara’s entry into the race comes days after he defected from the All Progressives Congress, APC, to the NDC, where he was officially received by the party’s National Leader and former Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Seriake Dickson, alongside other party stakeholders in Abuja.

During the meeting with Dickson and party leaders, the Rivers politician described the NDC as “a moving train,” insisting that his decision to join the party was driven by the need to protect the interests of Rivers people ahead of the 2027 elections.

He said worsening hardship, declining investments, and growing political tension in Rivers State informed his decision to seek the governorship seat.

“Today, we see a Rivers that is distressed, shortchanged and almost seeming like a conquered state, but we are not a conquered people,” he said.

The governorship hopeful appealed to supporters across the 23 local government areas of the state to mobilise massively ahead of the elections, urging Rivers residents to unite beyond political and ethnic divisions.

He called on voters to turn out in large numbers at polling units to “reclaim the soul of Rivers.”

Blessing Fubara also pledged to serve only a single four-year term if elected governor, saying the commitment was necessary to preserve the state’s existing rotational political arrangement.

According to him, the Rivers South-East Senatorial District must be allowed to complete its eight-year tenure under the zoning understanding recognised by political stakeholders in the state.

“It sets a very wrong and dangerous precedent if we alter the senatorial rotation of our leadership and governance in the state,” he said.

The aspirant further promised an inclusive administration focused on peace-building, economic recovery, youth empowerment, and restoring investor confidence across Rivers State.

His declaration has already generated fresh political conversations in Rivers State as political parties and stakeholders begin early alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
