Ganduje Publicly Recognises Sanusi as Emir of Kano

Former Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, on Tuesday publicly recognised Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano and Chairman of the Kano State Council of Chiefs.

Ganduje made the acknowledgement during the swearing-in ceremony of the new Deputy Governor of Kano State, Murtala Sule Garo, held at the Government House in Kano.

During his address, the former governor greeted Sanusi and addressed him by his full traditional title, a gesture that drew applause from dignitaries at the event. It marks the first public recognition of Sanusi in that capacity by Ganduje since their widely reported fallout.

Sanusi was deposed in 2020 when Ganduje was governor, following a prolonged dispute over the Kano emirate. He was later reinstated by the current administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who also reversed the appointment of Aminu Ado Bayero as Emir.

However, the emirship tussle has remained contentious, with differing claims over the rightful occupant of the throne amid ongoing political and legal disputes.

Tuesday’s event is seen as a notable shift in tone in the long-running crisis surrounding the Kano Emirate.
