Rainstorm Kills Two, Destroys Over 50 Houses in Kaduna Community

A rainstorm has killed two people and destroyed more than 50 houses in Dokan Mai-Jama’a, Chikun Local Government Area, leaving scores of residents displaced.

The Village Head of the community, Alhaji Hamisu Tukur, confirmed the incident, describing the destruction as widespread. He said several homes were completely levelled, while others were severely damaged.

Residents said the downpour, accompanied by strong winds, began at about 6:41 p.m. on Monday and lasted for over 40 minutes, causing extensive damage to buildings and infrastructure.

A visit to the area showed families sifting through debris in a bid to salvage belongings, while many others have been rendered homeless. Some buildings lost their roofs, exposing occupants to harsh weather conditions.

Victims were seen seeking temporary shelter as they struggled to cope with the aftermath of the disaster. They have appealed to the Kaduna State Government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency for urgent assistance.

The storm also affected parts of Sabon Gyero community, located within Millennium City in the same local government area, where several houses were damaged and more than 10 perimeter fences destroyed. Eyewitnesses said the rainfall disrupted traffic, blocked a major road, and forced motorists to seek alternative routes.

Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency has deployed a team to the affected community to assess the extent of the damage and determine the necessary intervention.
