Mbah Flags Off 70km Road Network in Enugu North

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has inaugurated the construction of over 70 kilometres of road infrastructure across the Enugu North Senatorial Zone, in a move aimed at strengthening economic activities and improving connectivity within the area.

The senatorial district comprises Nsukka, Igbo-Eze South, Igbo-Eze North, Udenu, Uzo-Uwani and Igbo-Etiti local government areas.

At the flag-off ceremony held in Nsukka on Saturday, the governor identified the project as a strategic intervention to drive economic expansion, noting that road infrastructure remains central to unlocking growth.

Among the key projects is the 52-kilometre Lejja–Aku–Ukehe–Egede–Afa–Akpakwume–Eke corridor, traversing Nsukka, Igbo-Etiti and Udi local government areas.

Mbah described the road as critical to linking communities and facilitating access to economic opportunities, reiterating his administration’s commitment to private sector-led growth enabled by government investment in infrastructure.

According to him, the 52-kilometre stretch, when combined with adjoining road works from Umuachara to Barracks and from Mechanic Village, brings the total coverage to approximately 70 kilometres.

“We are deliberate about building roads that connect communities and open up economic corridors. Infrastructure such as this remains the most effective enabler of growth,” he said.

The governor further assured residents of his administration’s resolve to deliver on its commitments, stressing that the projects are driven by need rather than political considerations.

Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Jude Asogwa, lauded the initiative, describing it as transformative for the council area. He disclosed that multiple road projects are currently underway within Nsukka, including the New Anglican–Ogrute Road, as well as roads in Mechanic Village and Enyiuchi.

Asogwa added that the administration had invested over N20 billion in infrastructure within the council over the past 48 months, noting that the ongoing projects would enhance mobility, stimulate economic activities and strengthen inter-community ties.

Also speaking, Chairman of the Nsukka Local Government Traditional Rulers Council, HRM Tony Ezema, commended the intervention, describing it as historic. He observed that several of the roads had remained in poor condition for decades, particularly during the rainy season, thereby hindering movement.

Ezema expressed optimism that the reconstruction would improve access to key institutions, including a Federal Government College, as well as farming settlements across the zone.
