Obi Joins Clergy, Faithful for Burial of Late Bishop Chukwu

Peter Obi joins Catholic clergy and faithful during the requiem Mass and burial of the late Most Rev. Peter Nworie Chukwu on Wednesday.

Presidential hopeful of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi, on Wednesday joined Catholic clergy and lay faithful at the requiem Mass and burial of the late Most Rev. Peter Nworie Chukwu, describing his death as a profound loss to the Church and society.

In a message shared on his X account, Obi said the late bishop’s passing was a painful loss to his family, the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki and the Universal Church, noting that his life was defined by dedicated service to God and humanity.

According to Obi, the homily delivered during the funeral Mass by Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji reflected on the inevitability of death and described Bishop Chukwu as a courageous and devoted shepherd whose life was marked by sacrifice, service and fidelity to his calling.

Obi also referenced remarks by Francis Nwifuru, who described the late cleric as a monumental loss to Ebonyi State and a pathfinder whose leadership transcended religious boundaries.

He noted that Archbishop Ugorji’s message further underscored the moral demands of leadership and the commitment expected of those entrusted with responsibilities both in the Church and public service.

The former Anambra State governor also acknowledged the presence of Archbishop Michael Francis Crotty, who represented the Holy Father at the burial and highlighted the unity of the Universal Church during the period of mourning.

Obi further commended Bishop Ernest Obodo for his leadership and efforts in ensuring a smooth and dignified funeral ceremony for the late bishop.
