One killed in bridal convoy motorcycle accident in Yobe State

A fatal road accident in Potiskum, Yobe State, has claimed the life of a young man, Abubakar Haruna, during a bridal convoy celebration.

The incident occurred on Friday evening and has renewed concern over reckless riding by youths during social festivities in the area. Eyewitnesses said a group of motorcyclists escorting a bride rode in a dangerous and aggressive manner through a busy part of the town, moving at high speed and carrying out risky manoeuvres with little regard for pedestrians and other road users.

The deceased’s brother, Muhammad Haruna, confirmed the incident. He said the convoy turned tragic when it reached a crowded section of the town. “My brother was standing by the roadside when one of the riders struck him violently on the head,” he said. He added that the impact caused Abubakar to lose balance and fall into a nearby drainage channel. “Before anyone could help him, he had already died from the injuries,” he said.

Muhammad described the death as “heartbreaking, sudden and entirely preventable.” He said reckless riding during bridal processions had become increasingly common in the area. “Every celebration now comes with dangerous displays on motorcycles. Innocent people are always at risk,” he said, calling on authorities in Yobe State to strengthen safety regulations and enforce existing traffic laws.

He further demanded justice for his late brother, insisting the rider responsible must be identified and prosecuted. “Whoever caused this must be identified and prosecuted. Accountability is necessary for justice and deterrence,” he said.

Residents of Potiskum expressed sadness over the incident, describing it as another warning about declining public safety during celebrations. Community leaders said the tragedy highlights the need for greater awareness, discipline and responsible behaviour among young people.

Potiskum, one of the most populated towns in Yobe State, has in recent times witnessed growing concerns over safety during public festivities. Many residents are now calling for urgent action by relevant authorities to prevent a repeat of such incidents.
