Presidency Reacts to Report of Plan to Rename Nigeria, Abolish Sharia Law
The Presidency has dismissed as false a viral report alleging that President Bola Tinubu plans to initiate constitutional amendments to change Nigeria’s name to the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia law in the North.
The claims, according to the Presidency, are part of what it described as a deliberate attempt to stir political unrest and heighten tensions ahead of future elections.
Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement on Thursday, said the report was “fake and politically motivated,” accusing unnamed actors of seeking to “overheat the polity” and generate public disaffection.
“The Presidency has dismissed as false a viral report claiming that President Bola Tinubu plans to initiate constitutional amendments aimed at changing Nigeria’s name… and abolishing Sharia law in the North,” the statement said.
Onanuga added that the report, which he said relied on anonymous sources, was intended to “stir political unrest, generate public disaffection, and overheat the polity in the build-up to the elections.”
He urged Nigerians to disregard the claims entirely, describing those behind them as “agents of destabilisation and promoters of disorder.”
The Presidency also denied reports suggesting that President Tinubu intends to transmit a proposed bill, allegedly code-named “Project True Federation,” to the National Assembly ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Onanuga stressed that constitutional amendments in Nigeria follow a strict legal process that cannot be unilaterally determined by the President or the National Assembly, requiring approval by two-thirds of lawmakers in both chambers as well as endorsement from at least 24 State Houses of Assembly.
He added that the President remains focused on implementing ongoing economic reforms aimed at delivering tangible benefits to Nigerians.
The statement also cautioned against the spread of misinformation, warning that fake news could intensify as the country moves closer to the election season.
