The Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, has issued a formal clarification on the correct official title of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following what it described as recurring errors by some organisations and media outlets.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the SGF, Mr Yomi Odunuga, and personally signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
According to the statement, the correct official appellation of the President is: “His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Senator Akume urged media organisations and members of the public to verify official titles through appropriate government communication channels before publication in order to avoid what he described as embarrassing and avoidable errors.
Mr Odunuga explained that the clarification became necessary after an error was observed in the naming and appellation of the President in a national newspaper publication of Wednesday, May 7, 2026.
The SGF further advised that official verification could be obtained through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation’s communication platforms, including its Facebook, Instagram, and X accounts, as well as its official email channel.
The statement reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to accurate official communication and responsible public information management.
