Soludo Urges Development-Focused Unionism on Workers’ Day

Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, has called on labour unions to adopt a more development-driven approach, emphasising collaboration with government to boost productivity and economic growth.

He made the call during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration held at Alex Ekwueme Square in Awka, where workers gathered to mark the annual event.

“Our labour unions should move towards development-oriented unionism,” Mr Soludo said, urging a shift towards stronger partnerships between organised labour and government institutions.

He also encouraged union leaders to promote accountability among workers and improve service delivery, noting that productivity should reflect the level of public investment in the sector.

Highlighting his administration’s efforts, the governor pointed to ongoing infrastructure projects, improvements in healthcare services, and expanded access to education. He said these initiatives were contributing to increased economic activity across the South-East.

Mr Soludo reaffirmed plans to strengthen the education and health sectors further, including the recruitment of additional teachers and continued investment as resources permit.

He also signalled reforms in the civil service, particularly the use of technology to monitor attendance and improve efficiency.

“We must continue to improve our public service, and that requires commitment from all stakeholders,” he added.

Speaking on behalf of organised labour, the state chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Humphrey Nwafor, said workers remained committed to fairness, dignity and improved welfare.

He called for better pay, job security and stronger social protection systems, while also highlighting the impact of insecurity on workers’ livelihoods.

Mr Nwafor commended the state government’s development efforts and pledged continued cooperation with the administration.

The event was attended by senior government officials, including Deputy Governor Onyekachukwu Ibezim and Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Somtochukwu Udeze, among others.
