Tears, outrage as slain Oyo teacher buried in Ogbomoso

Families, colleagues, and residents of Ogbomoso on Friday bid farewell to 49-year-old teacher, Adesiyan Adegboye, who was killed during the recent armed attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Adegboye, one of the victims of the coordinated assault on Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota; Community Grammar School; and L.A. Primary School, Esiele, was laid in state at Ayegun Baptist Church, Ogbomoso, before his burial at his residence in the Owolake area of the town.

The late teacher, born on December 11, 1976, was reportedly killed when armed attackers invaded the schools last Friday, abducting several teachers and students and throwing communities across Ogbomoso into fear and confusion.

The attacks triggered widespread panic in the area, forcing many parents to withdraw their children from schools amid fears of further violence. Some schools were also temporarily shut following rumours of armed bandits around the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, an allegation later dismissed by the institution’s management.

In response to the growing security concerns, the Oyo State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology announced the immediate suspension of all school excursions, field trips, sports competitions, and activities requiring students to move outside school premises.

In a circular signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, B.T. Oyinloye, and addressed to education administrators across the state, the government said the directive became necessary “in view of the recent security concerns.”

The circular stated: “In view of the recent security concerns, the Ministry is taking steps to safeguard the lives of students and members of staff in all schools in Oyo State.

“All School Administrators are hereby directed to suspend all excursions, field trips, sports competitions, and any other activities that require moving students outside school premises until further notice.”

It added that all previous approvals granted for such activities had been overridden by the new directive.

“School Administrators are equally enjoined to keep students within school premises during school hours and should report any suspicious activity around school premises to Law Enforcement Agencies within their jurisdiction,” the circular further stated.

According to the ministry, the directive takes immediate effect and would remain in force pending an improvement in the security situation.

The government’s action comes amid mounting public anxiety over the safety of students and teachers in schools across Oyo State following the deadly attack in Oriire Local Government Area.
