The Anambra State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the persistent challenge of erosion and flooding across the state, describing environmental degradation as a major threat to lives, property and the state's limited land resources.

The assurance was given during a joint inspection of erosion-prone areas in Ogidi and Onitsha by the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Architect Okey Ezeobi; the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Barrister Chijioke Ojukwu; and the Commissioner for Environment, Barrister Clem Aguiyi.

The team visited Trans-Nkisi Layout in the 3-3 area of Onitsha, the Marine Area along Akpaka Road and the Opi Stream corridor to assess the extent of damage caused by flooding and erosion and identify measures for government intervention.

Speaking after the inspection, Ezeobi expressed concern over the level of destruction recorded in the affected communities and assured residents of the government's commitment to preventing further damage.

“We have seen the impact of the erosion and flooding on communities and infrastructure. Government will take the necessary steps to address the situation, but residents must also avoid activities that contribute to environmental degradation,” he said.

Also speaking, Ojukwu warned against illegal developments on waterways and drainage channels, describing them as major contributors to erosion and flooding across the state.

“The Soludo administration will not hesitate to remove structures erected on waterways and other prohibited areas. Compliance with planning regulations is critical to protecting lives and property,” he said.

On his part, Aguiyi attributed many of the environmental challenges facing the state to human activities, including indiscriminate waste disposal and obstruction of natural drainage systems.

He urged residents to adopt environmentally responsible practices, stressing that government efforts alone would not be sufficient without public cooperation.

The Chairman of Trans-Nkisi Layout, Chief Onyebuchi Ndulue, commended the state government for responding to the concerns of residents and appealed for urgent intervention.

According to him, several buildings in the area are already under threat, with some on the verge of collapse due to the advancing erosion.
