Gov. Soludo Begins Regeneration of Onitsha Main Market, Targets Completion in 16 Weeks

The Anambra State Government has commenced the phased regeneration of the Onitsha Main Market as part of its urban renewal programme aimed at modernising commercial infrastructure and improving the trading environment across the state.

Speaking during the handover of the project site to the contractors, the Commissioner for Housing, Henry Arize, said the initiative reflected the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s commitment to transforming Onitsha into a world-class commercial hub through strategic investment in critical market infrastructure.

Arize explained that the project would be executed in phases to minimise disruption to business activities within the market. 

He said the areas previously demolished would be redeveloped with modern facilities designed to improve safety, enhance commercial capacity and create a more organised environment for traders and customers.

According to him, the phased approach followed extensive engagement with traders, market leaders and other stakeholders to ensure smooth implementation of the project while allowing commercial activities to continue.

The commissioner urged the contractors to adhere strictly to the approved specifications and the 16-week completion timeline set by the state government, stressing the importance of delivering a project that meets the expectations of traders and residents.

Responding on behalf of the contractors, representatives of Ferotex Construction and Ozo United confirmed that they had been fully mobilised to the site and were ready to commence work immediately.

Also present at the handover ceremony were the Commissioner for Commerce, Mrs Nomso Ebonwu; the Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Projects, Prof. Ebuka Nwankwo; the Managing Director of the Bureau of Public Procurement, Mr Obi Okonkwo; representatives of the Ministries of Local Government Affairs, Power and Water Resources, and Works, as well as the Chairman of Onitsha Main Market and other stakeholders.
