Gov. Soludo Visits Ogidi Flood Site, Promises Lasting Solution

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, has assured residents of the state's commitment to addressing persistent flooding and gully erosion challenges, following a visit to the flood disaster site in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area.

During the inspection of the affected area, Soludo sympathised with families impacted by the recent flooding and described the incident as a natural disaster that highlighted the urgent need for sustained environmental intervention.

The governor said environmental degradation, particularly flooding and gully erosion, remained the greatest existential threat confronting Anambra.

"As we continue to tackle this challenge, I want to emphasize that our environment remains our existential threat. While we work to address the issues, we must also acknowledge the need to intensify efforts to mitigate flooding and erosion in vulnerable communities across the state," he said.

Soludo noted that many of the environmental problems facing the state developed over several decades due to poor drainage planning, uncontrolled development and infrastructure projects executed without adequate water discharge systems.

According to him, providing a permanent solution would require significant investment and sustained commitment, stressing that challenges which accumulated over many years could not be resolved immediately.

"This is a very expensive undertaking, but Ndi Anambra must recognize that these problems took decades to develop and cannot be solved in a single day. We must intentionally address them. Government has a responsibility, and we are already taking concrete steps to confront these challenges," he said.

The governor assured residents that ongoing and planned environmental remediation projects across the state were aimed at reducing the impact of flooding and protecting lives, property and critical infrastructure.

He also commiserated with those affected by the disaster and reaffirmed his administration's commitment to building a more resilient and environmentally sustainable Anambra.

The visit forms part of the state government's broader response to environmental emergencies and its efforts to tackle flooding, erosion and other climate-related threats affecting communities across the state.
