The Anambra State Government has intensified implementation of the Onitsha Main Market Regeneration Project, with contractors executing key components of the initiative aimed at transforming the market into a modern, organised and sustainable commercial hub.

The Commissioner for Commerce, Mr. Nonso Chukwuma Ebonwu, disclosed this during a joint inspection of the project site on June 28. He said the visit was to assess the pace of work, strengthen inter-ministerial coordination and ensure quality delivery in line with Governor Chukwuma Soludo's Solution Agenda.

Ebonwu said contractors had commenced the removal of asbestos roofing at Gwongworo I and drainage excavation around the park area. He directed that construction debris be cleared daily to minimise disruption to commercial activities.

He added that arrangements were being made to provide lighting for night-time construction, while survey and engineering teams finalise site layouts, structural designs and locations for public conveniences, clinic buildings and other facilities.

The commissioner further disclosed that government was engaging stakeholders ahead of planned improvements along Bright Street and adjoining areas, where limited demolition may be required to create pedestrian walkways and improve accessibility.

"The regeneration of Onitsha Main Market goes beyond infrastructure. It is about creating a safer, more organised and globally competitive trading environment that will support businesses, attract investment and serve future generations," Ebonwu said.

Chairman of Onitsha Main Market, Hon. Chijioke Okpalaugo, commended Governor Soludo for fulfilling his promise to regenerate the market. He expressed satisfaction with the pace of work and assured the government of the traders' continued cooperation.

Ebonwu urged traders, market leaders and residents to support the project, expressing confidence that it would reinforce Onitsha Main Market's status as one of Africa's leading commercial centres while boosting economic growth and improving the ease of doing business.
