Enugu CP Orders Crackdown On Unregistered Vehicles, Covered Number Plates

The Enugu State Police Command has directed the intensification of strict but professional enforcement against unregistered vehicles and those with obscured, defaced, or unlawfully covered registration number plates across the State.

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, Bitrus Giwa, gave the directive in line with the subsisting order of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, mandating the impoundment of such vehicles and prosecution of offenders nationwide.

The Command stated that the enforcement became necessary due to the security risks posed by such violations, their frequent use in criminal activities, and breaches of extant laws.

According to the Commissioner, unregistered vehicles and tampered or concealed number plates undermine law enforcement operations, frustrate crime detection and investigation efforts, and are often used by criminal elements to evade identification and arrest.

Giwa therefore charged supervisory officers to ensure that the exercise is carried out strictly in accordance with the law, and with utmost professionalism, civility, and respect for the rights of citizens.

He warned that any officer found engaging in extortion, harassment, or any form of misconduct during the enforcement would face severe disciplinary sanctions.

The Commissioner further urged motorists operating unregistered vehicles or using defaced, obscured, or covered number plates, except where expressly permitted by law, to desist forthwith and ensure full compliance with relevant regulations.

He also called on residents of the State to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and supportive of ongoing security efforts by reporting criminal activities and suspicious movements to the nearest police station.
