Enugu North Bye-Election: Police Order Movement Restrictions
The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Bitrus Giwa, has assured residents and voters of adequate security for the Enugu North Senatorial District bye-election scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026.
The police commissioner gave the assurance in a statement issued on Thursday by the Command's Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, saying comprehensive security measures had been put in place to ensure a peaceful, orderly and credible electoral process across the senatorial zone.
According to the statement, human and vehicular movements will be restricted from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on election day in the six local government areas that make up the district: Igbo-Etiti, Igbo Eze North, Igbo Eze South, Nsukka, Udenu and Uzo-Uwani.
The restriction, however, exempts electoral officials and persons engaged in verifiable essential duties.
CP Giwa said the command had made adequate arrangements to guarantee the safety of voters, electoral personnel and election materials throughout the exercise.
The statement further disclosed that, on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, additional security personnel had been deployed to reinforce existing arrangements for the election.
According to the police commissioner, the reinforcements were drawn from Zone 13 Headquarters, the Anambra State Police Command, Police College Oji River and the Police Detective College, Enugu, in addition to personnel from other security agencies operating in the state.
He urged political parties, candidates, supporters and members of the electorate to conduct themselves peacefully and in accordance with the law before, during and after the election.
CP Giwa warned that acts of thuggery, ballot-box snatching, vote-buying, electoral violence and other offences would not be tolerated, stressing that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
He also called on residents of the senatorial district to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, activities and electoral malpractices to the nearest police station.
The commissioner reiterated the command's commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring a secure environment for the successful conduct of the bye-election.
