Police Arrest Couple Over Alleged Abuse of 10-Year-Old Boy in Anambra
The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a couple in connection with the alleged abuse of a 10-year-old boy in Awada, Obosi, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state.
The suspects, identified as 30-year-old Chisom Chukwukere and her husband, Chukwudi, were arrested following the circulation of a viral video showing the child with extensive injuries allegedly inflicted by the couple.
Police authorities said preliminary investigations indicated that the suspects allegedly used burning plastic materials to inflict severe burns on the victim, triggering widespread public outrage and calls for justice.
Meanwhile, the couple's infant child has been taken into protective custody by the Anambra State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare.
Reports indicated that during interrogation, Chisom appealed to police authorities and officials of the ministry to release the infant to her, claiming the child was ill and required her care.
A video circulating on social media showed the suspect pleading with authorities to return the infant, citing health concerns.
The development has generated strong reactions from members of the public, many of whom questioned how a person expressing concern for her own child's welfare could allegedly be linked to the abuse of another child.
The infant has since been placed in the care of a family member through arrangements coordinated by the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare.
Confirming the arrests, the spokesperson for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said investigations had been intensified to ensure justice for the victim.
"The police remain steadfast in enforcing laws designed to protect children from abuse, neglect, exploitation, and all forms of violence," Ikenga said.
He added that the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Mr. Ikioye Orutugu, had reaffirmed the command's commitment to protecting children's rights and welfare.
"The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, has reassured residents of the command's unwavering commitment to collaborating with relevant government agencies, child protection organisations, and community stakeholders to promote and safeguard the rights, safety, and welfare of children throughout the state.
"The Anambra State Police Command remains committed to promoting justice, compassion, and the protection of human rights in line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police," he said.
Police said investigations were ongoing and assured that all persons found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
