FG Approves Comprehensive NYSC Reform, Orders Amendment of Act

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a comprehensive reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), marking the first major review of the scheme since its establishment 53 years ago.

The council directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Youth, to amend the NYSC Act and its operational regulations to incorporate the approved reforms and facilitate their implementation.

A key component of the reform is the transition of the scheme's operational leadership from military to civilian administration. Under the new arrangement, the NYSC will be headed by a civilian, while the military will continue to provide security for corps members deployed across the country.

The Federal Government said the reform is aimed at repositioning the NYSC as a skills-oriented, productivity-driven and youth-empowerment institution capable of contributing more effectively to national development.

It said the restructuring aligns with the administration's broader economic agenda of building a one-trillion-dollar economy by equipping young Nigerians with relevant skills, promoting entrepreneurship and enhancing productivity.

The government noted that while the military would retain responsibility for the security and welfare of corps members, the new leadership structure would strengthen the scheme's developmental mandate and improve its operational efficiency.

The approval signals the beginning of a new phase for the NYSC, with the proposed amendments expected to provide the legal framework for the implementation of the far-reaching reforms.
