NDC Tightens Party Control, Orders Full Financial Disclosure

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced a series of measures aimed at strengthening internal discipline, reinforcing party supremacy, and improving financial accountability following resolutions reached at its second National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

The resolutions were contained in a statement issued in Abuja on June 7, 2026, and signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director.

According to the statement, the NEC reaffirmed the principle of party supremacy, directing that all governments elected on the platform of the NDC must consult party structures on major programmes, policies, and appointments, with the exception of personal staff appointments.

“The party remains supreme,” the statement said, stressing that members are expected to align their personal interests, political activities, and public conduct with the directives and objectives of the party.

The NEC also resolved that all affiliated groups, support organisations, and non-governmental organisations associated with the NDC must operate under the supervision of the party and should not function independently or in parallel with established party structures.

As part of efforts to strengthen internal governance, the party announced plans to develop a comprehensive code of conduct for party officials and candidates. It disclosed that a committee chaired by the National Legal Adviser has already been constituted to draft the framework.

The statement further revealed that the NEC inaugurated a National Reconciliation Committee to address grievances arising from internal disputes and foster unity among members ahead of future political engagements.

According to the party, the committee's mandate is consistent with the NDC’s commitment to building a strong institution driven by collective ideals rather than individual interests.

“The party is being developed as an institution and not as a personality cult or a special purpose vehicle to be used and discarded,” the statement added.

On financial management, the NEC emphasised the need for greater accountability and transparency in the handling of party resources. It directed that all party funds must be used strictly for party business and subjected to enhanced internal oversight mechanisms.

The party also introduced stricter financial disclosure requirements for candidates seeking elective office on its platform. Under the new arrangement, candidates will be required to fully disclose all funds raised and contributions received for election campaigns.

The statement explained that all campaign-related funds must be processed through designated party campaign accounts at the local government, state, zonal, and national levels, including governorship and presidential campaign accounts where applicable.

The NDC said the measures were designed to strengthen institutional accountability, improve internal democracy, and ensure that elected officials and party stakeholders remain accountable to the structures that produced them.
