Senate Suspends Recess, Summons Emergency Plenary

The Nigerian Senate has suspended its ongoing legislative recess and summoned lawmakers for an emergency plenary session to address rising security challenges across the country.

In a notice dated June 15 and signed by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, senators were directed to reconvene at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 11:00 a.m., following a directive from Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The notice stated that the emergency sitting was convened for “matters of urgent national importance, particularly issues relating to national security and other critical concerns that require immediate legislative attention.” Lawmakers had earlier proceeded on recess with resumption scheduled for July 7.

The development comes amid renewed national concern over insecurity, including terrorism, banditry, and kidnappings, as well as ongoing debates on constitutional reforms to strengthen Nigeria’s policing structure through the proposed creation of state police.

The Senate is expected to deliberate on security interventions and other legislative measures when it reconvenes, in what is seen as a significant shift from its earlier recess timetable. The Punch Newspapers reported the development on June 16, 2026.
