‘Climate Ministry is Up to Task on Carbon Market’ – Afadjato South MP Backs Govt’s Carbon Credit Framework
Member of Parliament for Afadjato South, Hon. Frank Afriyie, has assured the House that government is ready to manage Ghana’s carbon credit market responsibly, with the new Ministry for Climate Change leading the effort.
Contributing to the debate on carbon credits, Hon. Afriyie said: “Mr. Speaker, the carbon credit market, which is of course a voluntary platform for the absolute removal or reduction of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, should be a concern to all of us.”
Speaking as a member on the government side, he stated: “I really want to assure the Honourable Member that the Minister for Climate Change is up to the task. The creation of that particular ministry is in sync with issues of the carbon credit market and its effect and consequence on the environment.”
Hon. Afriyie cited the EPA Act, 2025, Act 1124, as the foundation. “In simple terms, the EPA Act, 2025, Act 1124, has created a robust market platform for Ghana, and indeed it is in line with the Paris Agreement, Article 6, which has to do with voluntary cooperation on emissions,” he said.
The Afadjato South MP linked carbon action to current climate impacts. “If you go to Europe today, most European countries are battling with a rise in temperature, from Greece to France and other countries.
We in Ghana, after several hours of downpour, are battling with floods and their devastating consequences, which the government is already trying to cater for,” he noted.
