CP Giwa Assures Enugu Residents of Improved Security Through Stakeholder Partnership
ENUGU – The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mamman Giwa, has assured residents of the Command's commitment to strengthening security through sustained collaboration with community stakeholders and other security agencies.
Giwa gave the assurance on Thursday during a one-day Town Hall Meeting with Security Stakeholders within Enugu Metropolis, organised by the Enugu Metropolis Area Command.
The meeting attracted traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth and women groups, student representatives, resident associations, market leaders and government officials.
The police commissioner said the town hall engagements, which had earlier been held in the other four area commands across the state, were designed to assess police performance, receive feedback from residents and identify emerging security challenges.
He said the exercise began in Udenu Area Command before moving to Nsukka, Oji River and Agbani, with Enugu Metropolis Area Command—the largest in the state, covering about 30 police divisions—hosting the final session.
"Whenever you are rendering services, there is a need for feedback. We want to know whether we have been doing our policing work well, where we need to improve and whether there are emerging crimes that should be brought to our attention," Giwa said.
"So far, from the responses of stakeholders, we are doing well, but we will continue to do better."
Giwa assured participants that issues outside the mandate of the police would be presented to the state government through the State Security Council.
According to him, the engagements have enabled the Command to identify peculiar security and developmental challenges affecting communities across the various area commands and police divisions.
He stressed that effective policing requires close collaboration with sister security agencies and members of the public.
"We cannot do it alone. Security is not the responsibility of the police alone. Looking at the strength of the police vis-à-vis the population, we cannot cover everywhere.
"We have continued to work closely with other security agencies, and the cooperation has improved tremendously. We will sustain that partnership."
Responding to concerns over kidnapping and insecurity in forest communities, Giwa said the Command was working closely with forest guards recruited by the Federal Government and the Enugu State Government.
He added that tactical police units had also been deployed to comb forests and flush out criminal elements, noting that ongoing operations would continue although operational details could not be disclosed for security reasons.
On concerns about members of the public assisting accident victims, the commissioner assured residents that the police would protect Good Samaritans who render humanitarian assistance.
He advised such persons to promptly notify the Divisional Police Officer in the area or contact the Police Public Relations Officer whenever they encounter difficulties.
During the interactive session, stakeholders called for enhanced security in Akwuke, Centenary City, Damija Under Bridge in Trans-Ekulu, Ugbo-Odogwu and other parts of the state.
Speaking during the meeting, the Chairman of the GRA Residents Association, Dr. Hillary Agbo, stressed the need to sustain existing security initiatives through continuous engagement and active community participation.
"We will re-establish manned security outlets on the streets to synergise with the police," he said.
Agbo noted that maintaining the current level of cooperation between residents and security agencies would further improve safety and security within the neighbourhood.
Also speaking, former Chairman of the GRA Neighbourhood Association, Dr. Dan Madueke, called for stronger collaboration among residents, neighbourhood security groups and conventional security agencies, describing partnership as critical to tackling emerging security threats.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), GRA Chapter, Chief Ifeanyi Nzekwe, urged residents to remain vigilant and continue supporting the police and other security agencies through intelligence sharing and community policing initiatives.
The Chief Security Officer of Enugu Terminal One, Holy Ghost, Chief Chuka Nwomeh, expressed concern over the growing number of homeless children and destitute persons using the terminal as a shelter.
He said the development had become a security concern, disclosing that 17 persons had been apprehended at the terminal for various criminal activities.
Also speaking, Felix Ogugbo highlighted the security gap between Centenary City and HELIU Estate and appealed for the restoration of the Distress Response Squad in the area. He also raised concerns over criminal activities around Amechi and Ugwuaji communities.
Similarly, the Secretary-General of the Cattle Dealers Association, Gariki New Market, Ali Ahmed, called for stronger collaboration between security agencies and market leaders to identify and eliminate criminal elements operating within the cattle market.
