Corps Member Killed in Crossfire

A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Abdulsamad Jamiu, has been killed after being struck by stray bullets during a gun battle between soldiers and suspected robbers in Abuja.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday at Shagari Estate in the Dei-Dei area of the Federal Capital Territory.

The Nigerian Army confirmed the development in a statement issued on Sunday by Olawuyi Odunola, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations at the Headquarters Guards Brigade.

According to the Army, troops of the Guards Brigade’s Quick Response Group were on routine night patrol when they received a distress call reporting an ongoing robbery in the area. On arrival, the soldiers came under fire from fleeing suspects, leading to a brief but intense exchange of gunfire.

During the confrontation, Jamiu was caught in the crossfire and fatally wounded.

“In the course of the engagement, Mr Jamiu was hit by stray bullets. Despite efforts to secure the area and preserve lives, he succumbed to his injuries,” the statement said, describing the loss as deeply regrettable.

The Army noted that the situation was initially volatile as troops worked to repel the attackers and protect residents.

It added that the Commander of the Guards Brigade, alongside officers and men, has extended condolences to the deceased’s family, the NYSC, and others affected by the incident.

A full investigation has been launched to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy, with authorities pledging to make the findings public.

The Army also said Jamiu’s remains have been deposited at Kubwa General Hospital and handed over to the appropriate authorities, while reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property.

Residents were urged to remain calm and continue cooperating with security agencies.
