Edun, Dangiwa Resigned, Not Sacked — Presidency

The Presidency on Wednesday clarified that former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, voluntarily resigned from office and was not dismissed.

It also confirmed that the former Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, likewise stepped down from his position.

The clarification was contained in a statement issued in Abuja by Presidential Spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga.

According to the statement, Edun cited health concerns in his resignation letter to President Bola Tinubu. The former minister, who turned 70 on Monday, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, describing his tenure as both a privilege and an honour.

“It has been a pleasure and privilege to serve your administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda,” Edun wrote. “Under your leadership, Nigeria has grown stronger, more resilient, and more respected internationally.”

The Presidency further disclosed that Edun paid a valedictory visit to the President on Tuesday, during which they held a closed-door meeting lasting about an hour. He is expected to shift focus to private business engagements.

Dangiwa, in his resignation, also thanked the President for the opportunity to serve on the Federal Executive Council.

President Tinubu, in response, commended both former ministers for their contributions to his administration’s reform agenda and wished them success in their future endeavours.

He has since tasked the new Minister of Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, with sustaining and deepening ongoing economic reforms, with an emphasis on fiscal discipline and innovation.

Meanwhile, the President is set to forward the nomination of Muttaqha Darma to the Senate for confirmation as Minister of Housing.

Edun previously served as Commissioner for Finance in Lagos State between 1999 and 2004, during Tinubu’s tenure as governor.
