EEDC opens on-site clinic to boost staff health support

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has opened a new on-site medical facility at its headquarters in Enugu, in a move aimed at improving staff welfare and workplace safety.

The sick bay, described by the company as “ultra-modern”, is designed to provide first aid and basic emergency care for employees, customers and visitors who fall ill or sustain injuries within the premises.

EEDC’s Managing Director and Chief Executive, Vincent Ekwekwu, said the initiative reflects the company’s focus on employee wellbeing, which he described as central to its operations.

He added that the facility is intended to stabilise patients before referring them to external healthcare providers where necessary, stressing that it is not equipped for long-term treatment or complex medical procedures.

The facility was officially opened by Ernest Mupwaya, Managing Director of MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited, who said the development was a practical response to the health risks that can arise in the workplace.

“It provides an important first point of care, given how much time employees spend at work,” he said.

The sick bay will be run by an occupational health nurse and is supported by an electronic medical records system developed internally by EEDC’s ICT team. According to the company, the system allows secure management of patient information, appointment scheduling and real-time monitoring, while maintaining confidentiality.

Chief Information Officer Idika Okechukwu said staff would be able to access services using their employee identification numbers, with safeguards in place to protect personal data.

EEDC’s Chief Finance Officer, Pauli Isiguzo, said investing in staff health contributes directly to service delivery, noting that a healthy workforce is key to operational efficiency.

Employees who attended the launch welcomed the initiative, saying it would improve their sense of safety and help them focus on their work.

The company says the project is part of wider efforts to promote a safer and more supportive working environment.
