The Federal Government College (FGC), Enugu Old Students Association has emerged overall winner of the fourth edition of the Unity Schools Old Students Association (USOSA) Sports Carnival, held in Enugu.
FGC Enugu secured top spot on the medals table with eight gold, three silver and two bronze medals, outperforming about 30 participating unity school alumni groups from across Nigeria.
Defending champions, Federal Government College, Ikot Ekpene, finished second with seven gold, seven silver and three bronze medals.
The week-long event featured a range of sporting activities, including football, swimming, lawn tennis, table tennis, badminton, basketball, volleyball and golf, alongside indoor games such as snooker, ludo and draught. Other highlights included tug of war and the traditional march-past.
Speaking at the closing ceremony at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu on Sunday, USOSA President-General, Michael Magaji, said the carnival was designed to promote unity and strengthen bonds among former students.
He described sport as a key tool for national cohesion, noting that the gathering provided a platform for alumni from diverse backgrounds to reconnect and collaborate.
“This platform enables us to come together, manage our diversity and demonstrate our commitment to unity, excellence and teamwork for national development,” he said.
Mr Magaji added that USOSA continues to leverage sporting and social engagements to sustain long-standing relationships among members, many of which date back between 30 and 50 years.
He said Enugu was selected as host based on the readiness of its alumni to organise the event, noting that the association rotates its activities nationwide.
“We are a national body and believe in one Nigeria. We go wherever our members are willing to host, and Enugu has once again proven to be a worthy host,” he said.
He also commended the Enugu State Government for its investment in public education, particularly in the development of smart schools, describing the state as a model for others.
Mr Magaji further reiterated the association’s commitment to supporting the education sector, saying alumni were giving back to a system that had once provided them with quality public education.
The USOSA Sports Carnival is part of ongoing efforts to promote unity, healthy competition and national integration among alumni of unity schools across Nigeria.
