Iran Seizes Two Cargo Ships in Strait of Hormuz as US-Iran Tensions Escalate Amid Fragile Ceasefire

 

Iranian forces have reportedly attacked three cargo vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iranian sources, following US President Donald Trump’s announcement that he was extending a ceasefire with Tehran.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says it has seized two of the ships and is escorting them toward the Iranian coast. A detailed summary of the incidents has been circulated as tensions in the key shipping lane continue to rise.

President Trump also stated that the ceasefire would be extended, while maintaining a US blockade on Iranian ports—part of what Washington describes as ongoing pressure ahead of planned talks with Iran in Pakistan.

However, uncertainty surrounds the diplomatic process. US Vice-President JD Vance did not depart for Pakistan on Tuesday as previously expected.

Reacting to the developments, an adviser to Iran’s parliamentary speaker dismissed the ceasefire extension, calling it “a ploy to buy time for a surprise strike.”

Meanwhile, security analysts have warned that the Strait of Hormuz—one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes—has become “too dangerous for all but a trickle of traffic,” a situation that could have significant consequences for global energy markets and trade.
