Nigeria's Kano state holds mass wedding for 1,500 couples

The Kano State Government says it is preparing to conduct a mass wedding for 1,500 couples under its social welfare programme known as “Auren Gata”.

Officials of the Kano State Hisbah Board confirmed that arrangements for the exercise have been concluded, with the event expected to take place before the end of May.

The Deputy Commander-General of the board, Dr Mujahideen Aminudeen, said the initiative under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is designed to support vulnerable residents and promote social stability.

He said the programme follows the perceived success of previous editions, which encouraged the government to expand its scope.

According to him, participation is voluntary and couples must meet specified requirements, including endorsement from community leaders and mutual consent between partners.

Aminudeen dismissed claims of forced marriages, stressing that beneficiaries are selected strictly through due process.

He added that all intending couples will undergo medical screening, including tests for HIV, genotype compatibility and other health checks, to ensure their wellbeing.

The official also said pregnancy tests would be carried out for female applicants as part of the screening process.
