Tinubu nominates Tegbe as Nigeria’s new power minister

Nigeria’s president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has nominated Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as Minister of Power, in a move aimed at reinforcing ongoing reforms in the country’s electricity sector.

The nomination, which is subject to confirmation by the Senate, was formally transmitted to lawmakers on Thursday, according to a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga.

Mr Tegbe’s nomination follows the resignation of the outgoing minister, Adebayo Adelabu, who stepped down to pursue elective office in Oyo State.

According to the presidency, Mr Tegbe brings more than three decades of experience spanning both the public and private sectors, with a background in fiscal policy, governance and institutional reform. He previously served as Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa, where he led initiatives on economic reforms and regulatory frameworks.

He currently holds the position of Director-General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership, coordinating development cooperation between Nigeria and China and engaging with stakeholders on economic and social development aligned with Forum on China-Africa Cooperation objectives.

The presidency said Mr Tegbe has also been involved in power sector reforms, working with key institutions such as the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company.

His appointment, if confirmed, is expected to support efforts to improve grid stability, strengthen regulatory frameworks and attract sustainable investment into Nigeria’s power sector, in line with the government’s broader economic agenda.
