The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, says all twenty-two registered political parties in Nigeria have submitted their membership registers ahead of the 2027 general elections, in compliance with the Electoral Act 2026.
INEC disclosed this in a statement issued by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Mohammed Kudu Haruna, who said the political parties met the deadline following an extension granted by the Commission.
According to the statement, the original deadline for submission was April 21, 2026, but was later extended to May 10 after political parties raised concerns during a meeting with INEC on March 24, 2026.
The Commission stated that all registered political parties submitted their membership registers on or before May 8, two days ahead of the revised deadline.
INEC explained that the adjustment was made to align with Section 77 subsection 4 of the Electoral Act 2026, as well as the approved timetable for party primaries scheduled to hold between April 23 and May 30, 2026.
The electoral body said political parties were required to submit their registers not later than twenty-one days before conducting their respective primaries.
Mr. Haruna said the Commission would now subject the submitted registers to the necessary verification process in line with existing electoral laws.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections in the country.
The Commission also urged political parties and stakeholders to continue complying with electoral guidelines as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
