AFRICOM Releases Footage of Nigeria–US Operation That Killed ISIS Commander

The United States Africa Command, AFRICOM, has released footage of a coordinated military operation which it says led to the killing of senior Islamic State commander, Abu-Bilal al-Minuki, and other top ISIS figures in northeastern Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Saturday, AFRICOM said the operation was carried out on 16 May 2026 under the direction of the President of the United States and the US Secretary of War, in coordination with the Government of Nigeria.

The operation is reported to have targeted ISIS-linked elements operating within the Lake Chad Basin, an area that has witnessed prolonged extremist activities across parts of northeastern Nigeria and neighbouring countries.

The release of the footage comes amid renewed security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States aimed at disrupting terrorist networks and weakening insurgent operations in the region.
