Anglican primate urges Jonathan to stay out of 2027 presidential race
The Primate of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Most Reverend Henry Ndukuba, has advised former President Goodluck Jonathan not to return to partisan politics ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking at the First Session of the 13th Synod of the Diocese of Abuja in Abuja, Archbishop Ndukuba said a political comeback could undermine Jonathan’s legacy as a statesman.
The Anglican Primate noted that the former president had already secured a respected place in Nigeria’s democratic history, particularly for conceding defeat after the 2015 presidential election.
According to him, Jonathan’s conduct during the transition earned him recognition across West Africa and the wider African continent as a symbol of integrity and peaceful leadership.
Archbishop Ndukuba urged the former president to maintain his current status as a respected elder statesman rather than re-enter active politics.
Goodluck Jonathan served as Nigeria’s president from 2010 to 2015 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party before losing the election to former President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress.
Since leaving office, Jonathan has participated in election observation and peace mediation missions across Africa under organisations including ECOWAS and the African Union.
