Awuni warns of worsening brain drain in health sector

The Member of Parliament for Okaikwei North, Hon. Theresa Lardi Awuni, has expressed concern over the increasing number of Ghanaian health professionals leaving the country for opportunities abroad, warning that the trend poses a serious challenge to the health sector.

She said the situation requires urgent government intervention to safeguard healthcare delivery. 

Speaking at the 2026 International Day of the Midwife celebration held at Korle-Bu and organised by the Greater Accra branch of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), she noted that the event was held under the global theme “One Million More Midwives.”

Hon. Awuni praised midwives for their dedication and central role in maternal and newborn healthcare, describing their work as vital to the health system. 

She warned that continued migration driven by better pay and improved working conditions abroad could weaken the country’s healthcare workforce.

“The trend poses a serious challenge to the health sector and requires urgent government intervention,” she said.

She added that efforts were already underway to address the situation. “The ruling NDC government is already taking steps to address the issue,” she stated.

Hon. Awuni also called for improved provision of medical equipment and supplies in health facilities, as well as better conditions of service, including enhanced remuneration and incentives, to retain health professionals in the country.
