CAF Unites Behind Infantino for 2027 FIFA Re-election Bid

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) says all 54 of its member associations have agreed to support FIFA president Gianni Infantino in his bid for re-election in 2027.

The decision was reached during a meeting of CAF members held in Vancouver, Canada, on 29 April, on the eve of the 76th FIFA Congress. The next FIFA presidential election is expected to determine leadership for the 2027–2031 cycle.

In a statement, CAF said its members had given “unanimous” backing to Infantino, who has led world football’s governing body, FIFA, since 2016 after succeeding Sepp Blatter.

Infantino has built strong ties across Africa during his tenure, with CAF citing increased financial support through FIFA development programmes, expansion of the men’s World Cup, and greater representation for African football on the global stage as key factors behind the endorsement.

His working relationship with CAF president Patrice Motsepe has also coincided with a period of reform within the African body. CAF has received increased financial assistance and governance support as it seeks to stabilise following previous leadership challenges.

Infantino’s presidency has seen significant changes within global football, including the introduction of new competitions such as an expanded Club World Cup and increased prize money for major tournaments. However, his tenure has also attracted criticism over governance decisions and the concentration of power within FIFA.

FIFA officials are meeting throughout the week in Vancouver, one of the host cities for the upcoming World Cup, with the 76th FIFA Congress scheduled to take place on Thursday.

The next FIFA Congress, where the presidential election is expected to be confirmed, is widely anticipated to be held in Morocco in 2027.
