Obi Warns of Declining Value of Labour as Nigeria Marks Workers’ Day

Peter Obi has marked International Workers’ Day with a message highlighting the challenges facing Nigerian workers, warning that the value of labour in the country is steadily declining.

In a statement released on Thursday, the presidential hopeful of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) described workers as the backbone of any nation, praising their resilience amid difficult economic conditions.

He said many Nigerians continue to support their families and sustain the economy despite rising hardship.

Obi expressed concern that the current minimum wage no longer guarantees a basic standard of living, citing increasing inflation, high food prices and transportation costs as key pressures reducing workers’ purchasing power.

“No nation can develop beyond the strength and wellbeing of its workforce,” he said, adding that productivity and national progress depend on the quality and commitment of human capital.

The former Anambra State governor warned that neglecting workers could have wider consequences for the country, while improved welfare and empowerment would drive growth and stability.

He also urged workers to use their electoral influence to promote accountable leadership, calling for governance defined by competence, character and credibility.

Obi encouraged Nigerians to reject corruption and divisive politics, stressing that collective action is needed to build a society where labour is valued and fairly rewarded.

He concluded by saying that national development must be anchored on justice, fairness and respect for workers.
