Rights Group Condemns Alleged Killing of Mene Ogidi

A rights organisation, the International Human Rights Observatory (IHRO), has condemned the alleged extra-judicial killing of Mr Mene Ogidi in Delta State, calling it a serious violation of human rights and an abuse of police authority.

The group’s Country Director, Ambassador Chimbo Obieze, made the remarks on Friday in Enugu while speaking with journalists.

He said the incident, reportedly involving some unprofessional police officers, had triggered widespread concern and renewed scrutiny of alleged abuses within Nigeria’s law enforcement system.

Describing the killing as “tragic and unacceptable,” Obieze said it represented a breach of citizens’ rights and called for those responsible to be held accountable.

He also commended the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Olatunji Disu, for what he described as a swift response, noting that an investigation had already been launched into the incident.

According to him, the prompt action by the police leadership was a positive step towards ensuring accountability and restoring public confidence.

“We commend the I-G for his quick intervention. It demonstrates a commitment to transparency and the rule of law,” he said.

Obieze urged the authorities to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation, adding that sustained reforms were needed within the police to prevent further cases of alleged brutality and extra-judicial killings.

He also said the organisation would continue to monitor the case and support the family of the deceased in their search for justice.
