Court Approves El-Rufai’s Medical Treatment in Abuja Under ICPC Watch

The Federal High Court in Kaduna has granted former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, permission to receive medical treatment in Abuja under the supervision of the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC).

According to a statement by ICPC spokesperson, J. Okor Odey, the approval followed an application by El-Rufai’s legal team seeking access to specialised dental and eye care. The court directed that he be escorted under strict supervision to medical facilities of his choice—including Mile Dental Clinic and Skipper Eye-Q Hospital—whenever necessary, and returned to custody immediately after treatment.

El-Rufai is currently standing trial alongside one Joel Adoga on charges bordering on alleged fraud and money laundering. Both defendants were arraigned on March 24 and pleaded not guilty. The court had earlier granted El-Rufai bail in the sum of ₦200 million with two sureties, while affirming the administrative bail granted to his co-defendant.

At the latest hearing, the defence—led by Oluwole Olaniyan (SAN)—urged the court to vary the bail conditions to allow medical access, while prosecution counsel, Dr. Agada Akogwu, opposed the request. After considering submissions from both parties, the court ruled in favour of the application but maintained strict ICPC oversight.

The matter has been adjourned for further proceedings.
