Enugu: Police Recover AK-47 Magazine, Arrest Suspect In Separate Operations

The Enugu State Police Command says its operatives have recovered an AK-47 magazine loaded with 30 rounds of live ammunition from suspected kidnappers following a gun duel in Enugu East Local Government Area.

In a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Daniel Ndukwe, the police said the recovery was made during a bush-combing and crime-prevention operation carried out by operatives attached to the Unity Division in collaboration with Forest Guards.

According to the statement, the operation took place on May 1, 2026, at about 4:30 p.m., when the joint security team encountered suspected armed kidnappers in a forested area of Enugu East.

“The suspects engaged the joint security team in a gun duel but fled with varying degrees of gunshot wounds due to the operatives’ superior firepower,” the statement said.

The police added that one AK-47 magazine loaded with 30 rounds of live ammunition and a winter cap were recovered from the scene, while efforts had been intensified to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.

In a separate operation, police operatives attached to the Central Police Station arrested a 27-year-old suspect identified as Odume Junior at the Mgbemena/Akwata Sub-Market area of Ogbete Main Market.

The arrest, which followed credible intelligence, was carried out on April 28, 2026, at about 9:20 a.m.

According to the statement, the suspect, who is linked to armed robbery activities, was found in possession of a locally made cut-to-size gun loaded with one live cartridge, alongside substances allegedly used for consuming methamphetamine, popularly known as “Mkpụrụ Mmịrị.”

The police said investigations were ongoing to apprehend the suspect’s fleeing accomplices, after which he would be arraigned in court.

The Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mr Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the operatives and the collaborating Forest Guards for what he described as their courage and professionalism.

He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to proactive policing and sustained operations aimed at flushing out criminal elements from the state.

The police commissioner also urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing credible and timely information to security agencies to enhance public safety and security across Enugu State.
