FG to launch radio station for adult literacy programme

The Federal Government says it is set to establish a dedicated radio station to deliver adult and non-formal education programmes across Nigeria, in a move aimed at expanding access to learning in underserved and remote communities.

Dr John Edeh, Director of Literacy and Development at the National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education, confirmed the development in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja. News Agency of Nigeria reported his comments.

He said the initiative had already received approval from the Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, and was designed to strengthen inclusive education delivery. According to him, radio remains one of the most effective tools for reaching people in hard-to-access communities.

Edeh explained that the planned station would broadcast structured lessons in literacy and vocational skills, with content designed for adults, nomadic learners and out-of-school children. “With the radio, we can reach every community, no matter how remote, because it is affordable and accessible,” he said, adding that the platform would ensure “no learner is left behind due to distance or lack of formal schooling opportunities.”

He further noted that the station would be jointly managed with the National Commission for Nomadic Education and other relevant agencies. “This will be a shared platform where different education agencies can contribute content and ensure that learning is continuous and widely available,” he said.

The project, officials say, forms part of a broader government strategy to use digital and traditional media to expand education access nationwide, particularly for vulnerable and marginalised groups.
