FRSC Arrests 35 in Enugu Over Fake Diplomatic Plates, Overloading

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has arrested and prosecuted 35 motorists in Enugu State for offences involving fake diplomatic number plates and vehicle overloading under its ongoing “Operation Guduma”.

The Corps said 14 of the offenders were prosecuted for using fake diplomatic number plates, while 21 others were sanctioned for overloading and mixed loading on highways.

The Corps Marshal, Mr Shehu Mohammed, disclosed this on Friday while speaking on the operation, in a statement delivered on his behalf by the Corps Commander, Operation Monitoring and Control Centre, FRSC Headquarters, Abuja, Ms Dorothy Ikpeme.

Mr Mohammed said “Operation Guduma is designed to close two critical gaps: security risks associated with fake diplomatic plates and safety risks caused by overloading, both of which endanger lives and undermine law enforcement.”

He added that “the operation’s targeted enforcement is aimed at eliminating the illegal use of diplomatic and fake number plates.”

The Corps Marshal also said the exercise would intensify action against overloading and mixed loading on highways, which he described as major causes of avoidable road crashes.

He stated that “the Corps frowns at the misuse of diplomatic plates, which poses a serious security threat by obstructing investigations, while overloading and mix-loading continue to cause avoidable crashes and loss of lives.”

Mr Mohammed further explained that the operation would focus on the apprehension and prosecution of vehicles using illegal diplomatic-style plates, including inscriptions such as NYCN, NUP, AMB, UN-AMB, PEACE AMBASSADOR, and NANS among others.

He noted that the five-day operation would enhance traffic flow on high-density corridors, increase patrol visibility, and involve the deployment of patrol vehicles, ambulances, tow trucks, and motorbikes in collaboration with other security agencies.

According to him, “the operation remains a warning and an opportunity for vehicle owners to correct documentation and stop unsafe loading practices. The goal is safer roads, not conflict.”
