Siminalayi Fubara, Governor of Rivers State, has been cleared by the All Progressives Congress (APC) screening committee ahead of the party’s governorship primary scheduled for 21 May 2026.
The screening, held at the Plateau Governors Lodge in Abuja, verified the credentials of 17 serving governors aspiring for party tickets. Fubara’s clearance formally places him in contention for the APC ticket in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive race in Rivers State.
The political landscape remains tense, with former Rivers governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, reportedly backing opposition to Fubara’s re-election bid. A known ally of Wike, Kingsley Chinda, has also been cleared to contest the primary, setting the stage for a potentially fierce intra-party battle.
Party insiders suggest the Rivers APC primary could be one of the most closely watched contests ahead of the 2027 general elections.
