I Never Promised to Fix Power Grid in Three Months — Tegbe

The Minister-designate for Power, Engineer Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, has denied reports alleging that he promised to restore stability to Nigeria’s national electricity grid within three months.

In a statement issued through his spokesperson, Mr. Adeola Adelabu, the minister-designate described the reports as inaccurate and a misrepresentation of remarks he made during his Senate screening on May 6, 2026.

According to the statement, Engineer Tegbe did not give any fixed timeline for completely resolving the country’s power challenges, but explained that reforms in the sector would follow detailed technical assessments and consultations with critical stakeholders.

The statement noted that the minister-designate assured lawmakers that initial efforts aimed at stabilising the national grid would commence within his first 100 days in office, while broader structural reforms could take up to one year or more to achieve.

Engineer Tegbe said the proposed reforms would focus on improving sector credibility, addressing gas supply constraints, expanding electricity metering, modernising power infrastructure, and strengthening accountability across the electricity value chain.

He also assured Nigerians that tariff reforms under his leadership would balance investor confidence with consumer protection, particularly for vulnerable electricity users.

“My promise to this chamber is that Nigerians will see visible improvement in the sector,” the minister-designate stated during his Senate screening.

Engineer Tegbe reaffirmed his commitment to transparency, measurable progress, and sustained engagement with stakeholders in efforts to address the nation’s longstanding electricity challenges.
