NECO to Begin Computer-Based Examinations This Year, Says Education Minister Alausa

Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has confirmed that the National Examinations Council, NECO, will commence Computer-Based Examinations (CBE) within the current year as part of ongoing education sector reforms aimed at strengthening examination integrity and modernising assessment systems across the country.

Dr. Alausa made the disclosure during the 25th anniversary celebration of NECO in Abuja, where he highlighted the Council’s progress in improving transparency, efficiency, and credibility in national examinations. 

He noted that the transition to computer-based testing reflects Nigeria’s broader shift towards technology-driven governance in the education sector.

The Minister explained that the new examination model is expected to significantly reduce examination malpractice through enhanced monitoring systems, real-time candidate tracking, and improved data security. 

He added that the reform will also promote critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and digital literacy among students.

In his remarks, the Registrar and Chief Executive of NECO, Professor Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi, said the Council has evolved significantly since its establishment, overcoming initial challenges of credibility and infrastructure gaps. 

He reaffirmed NECO’s commitment to fairness, timely release of results, and adherence to global best practices in assessment and certification.
