Lagos to introduce paid roadside parking scheme

The Lagos State Government says it will begin charging motorists for roadside parking as part of a new traffic management initiative aimed at improving orderliness and reducing congestion across the state.

The Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA) said the planned On-Street Parking Scheme would be introduced before the end of 2026, starting with a pilot phase in selected local government areas, including Ikeja.

The General Manager of LASPA, Adebisi Adelabu, disclosed this during a stakeholder engagement with the Chairman of Ikeja Local Government Area, Akeem Dauda, and members of the council’s management team.

According to her, the initiative is designed to improve parking management, ease traffic flow, and create employment opportunities for residents. She explained that local councils would play a key role in implementation and would benefit based on their level of cooperation.

Adelabu also noted that responsibility for parking regulation was previously handled by local governments before being transferred to LASPA by the Conference of the 57 Local Government Areas and Local Council Development Areas in the state.

She called for collaboration from stakeholders and urged councils to support the rollout, while also engaging residents to ensure public awareness ahead of implementation.

In his response, Dauda welcomed the initiative and pledged the council’s support, stressing the need for adequate sensitisation to prepare motorists for the new system.

Authorities say the scheme is part of broader efforts to address persistent traffic congestion in Lagos, where indiscriminate roadside parking has long contributed to gridlock in major commercial areas such as Ikeja, Lagos Island, Surulere and Apapa.
