Obi, Kwankwaso Join NDC, Receive Membership Cards

Former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and ex-Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Both leaders were presented with their membership cards on Sunday following a closed-door meeting with party stakeholders, where they were warmly received by NDC national leader and former Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Dickson.

Their defection comes after exiting the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which has recently been plagued by internal disputes and prolonged legal battles that weakened party cohesion.

Addressing party members and supporters, Obi urged stakeholders to avoid internal conflicts and litigation, emphasizing unity and purpose. He stated that the NDC aims to build a government capable of restoring security, economic stability, and public confidence in governance.

“We do not want to waste time in courtrooms,” Obi said, stressing the need to focus on issues affecting ordinary Nigerians, including insecurity and economic hardship.

Kwankwaso also called on Nigerians to join the party, announcing that registration efforts had already commenced among his supporters.

In his remarks, Dickson described the NDC as a fast-growing and stable political platform, noting that the party operates without factional divisions or legal disputes. He expressed confidence that the inclusion of Obi and Kwankwaso would strengthen the party’s vision and national appeal.

Obi had earlier left the Labour Party in December 2025 to join the ADC, citing national interest and the need for a stronger opposition. However, persistent internal crises within the ADC prompted his latest move to the NDC.

The development underscores ongoing political realignments among opposition figures as preparations intensify for the 2027 elections.
