Trump and Xi conclude ‘very successful’ talks in Beijing

United States President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have concluded what both sides described as high-level and productive talks in Beijing, wrapping up a state visit marked by trade, security and geopolitical discussions.

President Trump said the meeting was “very successful, world-renowned, and unforgettable,” while Chinese state media quoted President Xi as describing the visit as “historic and landmark,” as both leaders sought to project a positive tone following two days of meetings.

According to details emerging from the discussions, trade relations featured prominently alongside issues relating to oil supply, Iran and Taiwan. The talks are understood to have taken place over several sessions during the visit, which concluded with a symbolic walk through Zhongnanhai Garden.

President Trump also told Fox News that President Xi had committed to withholding military equipment from Iran. He further claimed that China supported keeping the Strait of Hormuz open and had agreed to increase purchases of oil from the United States, although no formal agreement documents were immediately released.

However, uncertainty remains over the full scope of any reciprocal commitments from Beijing. As noted by a senior international reporter, while President Trump “talked a lot about what he got from China,” he “refused to elaborate on what China wants in return,” underscoring lingering questions about the balance of concessions reached during the talks.
