Why We Honoured Igwe Achebe at 85 – Otti
Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti says the state government honoured the Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, at 85 to celebrate a lifetime of integrity, leadership and service to humanity.
Governor Otti spoke in Umuahia during an event organised by the Abia State Government to mark the monarch’s 85th birthday.
He warned political leaders against divisive politics based on ethnicity and religion, saying such tendencies could lead to the emergence of the wrong people in leadership positions.
“So, we are all one and the same. When misguided politicians want to divide us, they begin to remind us that you are from here, the other person is from there,” he said.
The governor described the Obi of Onitsha as a selfless leader whose life of wisdom, honour and diligence continues to inspire younger generations across Nigeria and beyond.
“We want our young people to know that it pays to be diligent; that honour pays,” Otti added.
Governor Otti said the celebration was intended to send a strong message that hard work, integrity and service to society still attract recognition.
He also disclosed that his administration is rebuilding the Ojukwu Bunker as part of efforts to preserve the history and heritage of the South-East.
Also speaking, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe described the ceremony as an opportunity to celebrate a legend, saying Igwe Achebe has brought dignity and class to the traditional institution in Igboland and beyond.
Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili described the monarch as an exceptional leader who has become an institution, while urging Abians to continue supporting Governor Otti’s transformation agenda.
Responding, Igwe Achebe thanked the governor for the honour and commended his leadership style, describing him as intelligent, hardworking and result-oriented.
The event attracted traditional rulers, political leaders, clergy and business figures from across the country.
