CDOWA Urges Mothers to Raise Responsible Future Leaders

The Civil Defence Officers’ Wives Association (CDOWA) has called on mothers to take deliberate steps in raising children who will become responsible and impactful leaders in society.

The Chairperson of CDOWA, Enugu State Chapter, Dr. Josephine Willie, made the call during the 2026 Family Retreat and Workshop themed “One Heart, One Mission: Building a Stronger CDOWA Family.” She said the family remains the foundation of every stable society and must be strengthened to address rising social challenges.

Dr. Willie noted that many of the insecurity and moral challenges in society are linked to weak family structures and poor child upbringing. She stressed that children raised with love, discipline, and strong moral values are more likely to grow into responsible and compassionate adults.

“Therefore, as mothers and wives, our role extends beyond our homes; we are builders of society and custodians of the future,” she said.

She explained that the retreat was designed to strengthen unity among members, encourage reflection, and promote sisterhood among wives of security personnel who often face the realities of long separations and emotional stress due to service duties.

“It is a time to pause from our daily demands, reflect on our journey, strengthen our bonds, share our experiences, and renew our commitment to one another as members of one family,” she added.

Dr. Willie also expressed sympathy with parents whose children remain in captivity, praying for their safe return. She commended sister associations including NAOWA, NAFOWA, POWA, NICOWA, and ROSOWA for their support, as well as partners from government ministries and civil society groups.

The Patron of CDOWA Enugu State Chapter, Dr. Elijah Willie, who is also the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Enugu State, urged families to take responsibility for correcting negative behaviours early in children.

He said the family remains the bedrock of a stable society, stressing that strong homes are essential for building a peaceful nation.

The workshop featured interactive sessions on empowerment, financial management, and a lecture titled “Fostering Unity in the Family,” delivered by Dr. Ebele Igwemeka of the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus (UNEC). It also included medical talks, health checks, and free drug distribution for participants.
